A provincial program to introduce people to recreational fishing has been expanded.
‘Learn 2 Fish’ has become very popular.
The free community sessions are organized by staff of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture or volunteers from local sport-fishing organizations.
Department spokesperson Amber Creamer says the program was originally designed to be delivered in a Grade 4 classroom setting.
“We do also deliver to some after school groups like cubs, guides and 4H. Recently, we’ve been trying to do more community events to get parents and children out at the same time.”
A session was recently held in South Ohio, Yarmouth County at a private pond near Moody’s Corner.
About seven youth attended, and Creamer says they had a great time and caught a lot of fish.
Sessions were also held in several Yarmouth County schools.
