The Mayor of Yarmouth says work, scheduled to begin Wednesday, will transform part of the downtown.
It’s all part of an on-going, multi-part, revitalization plan.
Pam Mood says Main Street from John to Cumberland streets will be closed to traffic, likely until the first of June.
She says the big thing will be the bump-outs.
“Trees, planters, just a gathering place, benches. People need places to sit and gather on Main Street. It can create a wonderful environment for people.”
Mayor Mood also says the facade program will continue this year.
Businesses can apply for up to $5,000 in funding from the town to spruce-up their store fronts.
The businesses must have matching funds.
She says it all helps to rejuvenate the downtown core.
“If we want to fill these empty storefronts, I’ve heard it time and time again, we have to invest. So we’re saying to potential owners, not just the businesses that are there that we’re behind you, we believe in you and we are willing to put our money where our mouth is, so to speak.”
