The MLA for Clare says an oil spill is affecting the wharf in Saulnierville.
The Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance is recommending a closure of the wharf to prevent further contamination.
Ronnie LeBlanc brought the issue to Nova Scotia’s minister of fisheries.
“Will the minister shut down the Saulnierville wharf to ensure that a full environmental cleanup begins immediately?” asked LeBlanc.
Environment minister Timothy Halman says their division has been in contact with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and they continue to monitor the situation.
LeBlanc says the oil spill jeopardizes the reputation of our seafood exports.
Fisheries minister Kent Smith says lobster is our biggest export, and when contamination concerns arise, they take it seriously.
He says it’s the responsibility of the CFIA, but they remain in contact.
We’ve reached out to the CFIA for comment.
