The Yarmouth Mariners had a perfect start to their 23rd regular season.
They beat Pictou County 5-4 in overtime in their home opener on Friday night, local player Jared Pitman had the extra-time winner.
Pitman says getting the win was most important.
“The OT winner was great, but getting the two points is really big to start the season Getting those points in the bank will go a long way at the end of the season,” said Pitman postgame.
Yarmouth trailed three times by one goal, rallied to take the lead 4-3 in the third, before giving up a late game-tying goal.
The Mariners followed up with a 9-3 win over Fredericton Saturday night at home.
Alexis Tanguay had a hat-trick for the Mariners, who were led by a four-goal second period.
Thomas Fontaine was the winner in goal both nights.
Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says it was a strong start.
“We scored by committee. To get off to a good start, every game in our division is going to be so tough. We need to get those points when they’re there. I’m very pleased with our start,” said Barron after Saturday’s win.
The Mariners take on the Crushers on the road Thursday.
They’re back home to face the Summerside Western Capitals on Saturday night.
