A plan to double the province’s population isn’t sitting well with the leader of the opposition.
The Liberals’ Zach Churchill says Premier Tim Houston needs to slow down on his promise to increase the number to two million by 2060.
He says it’s creating real challenges for people.
“We’ve seen the highest rental increases in the whole country over the last three years. I’m pro-immigration and pro-growth, but that doesn’t mean that the Premier can double the population when we’re out of houses, and our healthcare system can’t keep up,” said Churchill.
In the legislature, Houston accused Churchill of not supporting immigration.
He said Churchill is against population growth, but hundreds of healthcare workers moved to the province last year.
“The member from Yarmouth wants more healthcare workers, just not from another country. He should be very clear with Nova Scotians that that’s his position,” said Houston during Question Period Thursday.
Houston said it’s a 40 year plan that’s focused on health and skilled trades.
