After years of planning, the Congres Mondial Acadien is here.
Thousands are expected in southwest Nova Scotia for the week-long festivities.
Clare’s tourism manager Larry Peach says they’re also hosting over a dozen family reunions in the region.
“We’re expecting record numbers over the next couple of weeks. We’re looking forward to welcoming Acadian cousins from around the world, from Louisiana, Quebec, France, New Brunswick and next door,” said Peach.
Events are on in Argyle, Yarmouth, Barrington and more throughout the week.
The opening ceremony goes Saturday at Universite Sainte-Anne in Church Point.
Communications director Trevor Murphy says people will remember this for a long time.
“We want people to participate, and welcome folks who are visiting. We want them to live their version of Acadian culture,” said Murphy.
Most events are free, but some that are ticketed are already sold-out.
The Congres runs until August 18.
