A Yarmouth man is off to Moncton, New Brunswick tomorrow to take part in a big anniversary.
It’s been 60 years since J. Calvin Kent and the St. Bernard’s basketball team in Moncton won the Maritime Junior Championship.
Kent says they defeated St. Dunstan’s from Charlottetown in the final series.
“And we beat them by one point in Charlottetown, and we tied them in Moncton at the high school. It was a close series. We then went on to Nationals, where we lost to Toronto.”
It was the first of three straight championships for Kent and St. Bernard’s from 1957-1959.
Kent was stationed in Moncton in the Navy at the time, and says he had to play for the Navy team as well, even against St. Bernard.
Every year, the 12 remaining teammates have an annual get together.
Kent says this year, the anniversary will be recognized at the Moncton Sports Wall of Fame ceremony.
“We’re all very proud of our accomplishments. It’s nice to get together and talk about the past and the present, about what we’re now involved in.”
The team was inducted into the Wall of Fame in 2015.
Kent himself was inducted into the Yarmouth Town and County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame last year for basketball and baseball.
