Growing up close to salt water that actually froze thick enough to walk on ” Back in the 70’s /80’s ” smelting was a rather popular thing to do and could be time consuming in the elements on the best of days. Back in the days of Multiple line fishing , people could use many lines attached to a wooden ” horse” to fish smelts . Today only a single line is permitted , ice conditions in many areas of the Tri – Counties have not been favorable for smelt fishing in many years .
Over the past week I have been seeing many social media posts and pics of Smelts !
Most smelts sold by roadside vendors or grocery outlets are a product of New Brunswick.
