Illegal dumping is a problem in the Municipality of Yarmouth.
Over 68 reports were made from April 1st, 2021 to March of last year.
The municipality is taking action, and will begin enforcing the ‘reverse onus’ clause of their Solid Waste Resource Collection and Disposal By-law this April.
That means anyone who’s name or address is found in illegally dumped waste is responsible for it.
Warden John Cunningham says people need to stop throwing garbage bags where they don’t belong.
“The residents have told many councillors and fellow colleagues that we need to start enforcing this, because it’s getting out of hand, and it definitely has. Hopefully when people are aware of the Summary Offence ticket they could get, they would not dispose of their garbage this way,” says Cunningham.
Violators could be fined up to five-thousand dollars.
Cunningham says the municipality has many easy and cost-effective disposal options.
