With Dumping Day fast approaching, DFO is preparing for the start of the lobster fishing season.
They’re working with port reps, the Coast Guard Environment Canada and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre to make sure it’s a safe Dumping Day.
While there is a potential for the season to start on Saturday, DFO’s Area Chief of Resource Management for Southwest Nova Dwayne Surette says they still need to meet with port reps and Environment Canada.
“We’ll have that call on Thursday to discuss weather conditions and other sea state conditions,” says Surette. “We’ll make a decision then that will be relayed out through the reps.”
Surette gives us an idea of how many fishers will be heading out on the water.
“There’s approximately, for LFA’s 33 and 34, 1,500 vessels and around 4,100 captains and crew.”
He reminds fishers to avoid overloading their vessels, make sure all of their safety equipment is working and make sure their sail plan is in place.
