A popular race has been run for the last time.
The Sheila Poole 10k was a staple of Yarmouth Seafest every July, but the organizing committee has decided to retire the event.
Nancy Poole-Bishara says the race didn’t happen for two years because of the pandemic.
“Everything has a season, everything doesn’t last forever, and we felt it was time to retire the event.”
The race was renamed in 1998 in memory of Sheila Poole, who was a well known member of the running community.
Sheila was Poole-Bishara’s sister, and she thanks everyone who helped over the years.
Other groups are encouraged to apply to Run Nova Scotia to re-invent the race.

Sheila Poole 10K Road Race Retired
After 24 years of hosting the popular Sheila Poole 10K Road Race, the organizing committee has made the decision to retire the event. Over the years the 10K run, under the umbrella of Run Nova Scotia (RNS), has been supported by local and provincial businesses, and legions of volunteers and runners of all ages. The longevity and success of this event is directly attributed to these people and organizations. The decision to retire the Sheila Poole 10K is a reflection of the committee’s wish to honour Sheila within the community, in a different manner.
Sheila Poole (1962-1997) was a well-known and much loved member of the running community. Although awarded many times on a local and provincial level for her athletic ability, Sheila is most remembered for her positive nature, mental toughness and caring attitude. In dedication to Sheila, The Human Race 10K event, held annually in Yarmouth since 1984, was renamed The Sheila Poole 10K in 1998. Combined, this race has been part of the Run Nova Scotia Road Race Series for 38 years.
Run Nova Scotia is a not-for-profit organization, a division of Sport Nova Scotia. Since its inception in 1983, Run Nova Scotia has fostered and advanced road running all across the province. Its mission is to promote health, fitness and camaraderie to people of all ages and abilities through the sport of road running.
Retiring the Sheila Poole 10K provides an opportunity to reinvent a 10K event in our area. Currently, the third Saturday in July is open to any group or organization interested in picking up the torch. If the incoming organizers wish to be part of the Run Nova Scota Road Race Series in 2023, applications are due December 31, 2022. The Series is selected in January.
