A tribute to a well known Yarmouth nurse.
A plaque honouring Sara Corning was unveiled this morning at Yarmouth Elementary School. A ceremony to unveil the plaque was held and attended by students and Yarmouth mayor Pam Mood.
Corning is known internationally for saving the lives of thousands of Armenian and Greek children during an upheaval in Turkey in 1922.
Valarie Cormier is with the Sara Corning Society and says it’s an honour to tell her story.
“We really hope that it’s going to be really inspiring for these children and everybody for many years to come,” says Cormier. “And I believe Sara Corning would approve.”
She says while many people remember Sara the nurse, today was about honouring Sara the educator.
“She was also a teacher,” says Cormier. “In a letter that we still have at the Yarmouth County Museum she wrote something that was very poignant and we thought it was very appropriate to share with the rest of the world.”
The message was “education is what all nations need to advance” which has now been fixed on the plaque.
Corning is also being honoured with a scholarship by the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation which was announced earlier this year.
