Nova Scotian Olympian Sarah Mitton claimed the Canadian record in shot put over the weekend with a career-best throw of 19.58 meters.
Mitton made her record-breaking throw with her final attempt at the Golden Horseshoe Prep Meet in Hamilton on Saturday.
Prior to her throw, the record stood at 19.28 metres and was held by Mitton’s longtime training partner and friend Brittney Crew.
Mitton made her Olympic debut last year in Tokyo where she finished 28th, with a best throw of 16.62 metres.
To put her record-breaking throw in perspective, had it been thrown at the Tokyo Olympics it would have been enough to claim the gold medal which was won by China’s Gong Lijiao with a throw of 19.46 metres.
Her throw also comes in as the second-best throw in all competitions so far this year.
