A spokesperson for striking professors and librarians at Universite Sainte-Anne says they welcome an external mediator to help end the work stoppage.
Yesterday, the province appointed mediator Michelle Flaherty to help resolve the six-week long labour dispute between the striking instructors and the administration.
Professor Darryl Whetter says they had proposed mediation early in the process.
“At that point, the province didn’t yet think the stakes were high enough. Now that students are at risk of losing their semester, they’ve agreed with us that mediation and external expertise is welcome,” says Professor Whetter.
In a statement to Acadia News, the administration says they applaud the province’s appointment of an external mediator.
They say the university has always been ready and willing to continue discussions and they look forward to resolving outstanding issues.
Professor Whetter says they welcome any public engagement and a chance to broaden the dialogue on transparency.
“When part of our point is, more information needs to be shared. There are massive investments in public education. A public mediator is great for us.”
The professors are holding a demonstration in Halifax today, marching from Grand Parade to Province House.
