The Town of Digby is dedicating today to Ukraine.
A flag raising ceremony will be held at the Digby Tourist Bureau this afternoon.
A cheque presentation will follow from Diane Axent, who organized a Ukrainian Pysanky egg fundraiser earlier this month.
Digby Mayor Ben Cleveland says they are proud to help.
“I saw some comments saying maybe we should focus closer to home. But a border doesn’t mean that we don’t reach out to help people who have been displaced from their homes. This is unprecedented since the Second World War. We need to step up and help these people,” says Cleveland.
Nearly $6,300 was raised, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis Fund.
Cleveland says he’s proud of the residents of Digby.
“Over three million people have left Ukraine, and seven million are displaced within the country. I think it’s wonderful that people here in Digby are stepping up and realizing they need the help.”
There will be more events today to help raise funds at the Sydney Street Pub, including Taco Tuesday.
Also, a chance to meet and learn more from Rebecca McLeod, Philanthropy Associate with the Canadian Red Cross in Dartmouth.
