Taxi rates are going up in the Town of Yarmouth.
Last night, council passed second reading of a by-law amendment to charge an extra dollar for each additional passenger over the age of 12.
Council heard from four of its five cab companies that the amendment didn’t go far enough with rising costs.
A motion was then made to increase the base rate by one dollar.
Mayor Pam Mood says they listened to the industry.
“We certainly all know about the gas prices right now. It certainly must be a shock to them, and of course their economics. We wanted to give a little bit of help there,” says Mood.
The base rate change will need to pass second reading at the next council meeting.
This would put the taxi fare up to nine dollars during the day and ten overnight.
