Good Morning !
Today we celebrate an ” Action Figure” that many boys had growing up. I was one of those kids in the late 60’s early 70’s that had a G.I Joe , ahh the adventures and torture that Joe endured was totally imaginative and magical at times, he was waterproof, weatherproof , not dog chewable proof though .. Joe was not a “Doll” !
Here’s a little fact : Hasbro invented the term ‘action figure’ because it believed boys wouldn’t play with a ‘doll’.
Being a kid ” Boy ” in the 60’s through the 80’s , playing with G.I Joe was all the rage , it seemed every boy in the neighborhood and all my school chums had G.I Joe’s and loved to show them off, trade them and make sure you had the latest one that came on the market .
the name was inspired by the 1945 Robert Mitchum movie “The Story of GI Joe”
Here’s a bit of history on G.I Joe .. The original 12-inch (30 cm) line was introduced on February 2, 1964.
Wikipedia tells us : G.I. Joe is an American media franchise and a line of action figures owned and produced by the toy company Hasbro.[3][4] The initial product offering represented four of the branches of the U.S. armed forces with the Action Soldier (U.S. Army), Action Sailor (U.S. Navy), Action Pilot (U.S. Air Force), Action Marine (U.S. Marine Corps) and later on, the Action Nurse. The name is derived from the usage of “G.I. Joe” for the generic U.S. soldier, itself derived from the more general term “G.I.“.[5][6][7] The development of G.I. Joe led to the coining of the term “action figure“. G.I. Joe’s appeal to children has made it an American icon among toys. For More On G.I Joe CLICK HERE
