A deer stranded on Lake Milo in Yarmouth was rescued this morning.
Just after 8 a.m, volunteer firefighters with the Yarmouth department made their way onto the ice, and were able to use a rescue sled to get the deer back to shore.
Yarmouth fire chief Mike Deveau praised the firefighters that went 100 feet out onto the ice.
“It was a combined effort, but without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, these are the things that would be a lot more challenging to do,” says Deveau.
He says the ten minute rescue was only possible because ice conditions were good, and that’s not always the case in these situations.
Deveau says the deer was not injured.
“It was in good shape, we assessed it, and there were no broken limbs. We took it across the street so it wouldn’t head back for the water again and released it.”
The Department of Lands and Forestry also assisted.
