The Town of Yarmouth amended a by-law that restricts citizens from feeding wild animals.
At last week’s meeting, the wording in Section 3.0 of the by-law was changed to specifically state deer and raccoons, along with any other wild animal cannot be fed in such a manner that it interferes with another person’s property.
Deer are overpopulated in the town, and Mayor Pam Mood says they cause hardship.
“It’s not just that they’re being fed, but they’re dangerous. They can cause car accidents, and they carry Lyme disease. They don’t belong in town limits,” says Mood.
Mood says the town is trying to get the Department of Natural Resources to address the problem, but so far have been unsuccessful.
“We’ve been told they don’t work in towns. We have to work with them to see if there’s something they can do. It’s just dangerous, and they cause a lot of hardship on folks.”
The ‘Feeding Wild Animals’ by-law came into effect in September, 2020.
