No recommendation from the Municipality of Yarmouth’s Planning Advisory Committee on aquaculture.
After several learning sessions, a meeting on Tuesday night provided no direction for municipal council to make a decision.
The committee considered recommending changes to the Land Use By-Law and Municipal Planning Strategy to allow more types of aquaculture activities in rural industrial zones.
A motion that would have allowed any aquaculture proponent to use and return water to a marine or aquatic environment under provincially and federally approved regulations was defeated 4-3.
Chair and councillor Trevor Cunningham says the next steps will happen at the council table in the new year.
“We’ll take the defeated motion into consideration, collect additional information and perhaps hold a public hearing, and we’ll continue look at the issue,” says Cunningham.
The company Boreal Salmon wants to develop an open-flow, land-based salmon farm in Chebogue Point.
The PAC met with several industry experts, scientists and members of the public both for and against aquaculture during the learning sessions in October and November.
