An interpretive panel was unveiled in the north-end of Yarmouth on Sunday.
It’s at the Doug Melanson Park, on the site of the former Milton School.
The panel provides details about the history of the school, which closed its doors in the late 90s. and Melanson, who was a beloved care-taker.
Park committee member Dave Sollows says the site has great meaning to many in the community.
“It kind of puts the picture together for anyone who happens to be visiting the site. It has a lot of meaning for the people that attended school there, as well as the people who have trees or benches memorialized to loved ones,” says Sollows.
The panel was possible with donations from the children of Kit Lockhart, and the Yarmouth Dental Group in memory of Imrich Kiraly.
Sollows says despite a lack of top-end facilities, many of Milton’s students went on to do great things.
“And some of the stories that we get back of what they’ve achieved, it could be a real inspiration to students that are in our schools today.”
The park opened in 2019 as a greenspace for citizens to enjoy, through a partnership with the town and the Milton Improvement Society.
