Yarmouth’s MLA asked about the status of the Nova Scotia ferry in the legislature this week.
During Question Period yesterday, Zach Churchill asked Public Works Minister Kim Masland if the PC’s would maintain the service.
Masland indicated they will follow through on their contract with Bay Ferries, and the CAT ferry will continue sailing between Yarmouth and New England.
Churchill says it’s great news for tourism operators, who have been struggling due to the pandemic.
“This ferry service is absolutely critical. The people that come over through Yarmouth on this ferry spend twice as much as other visitors to the province. This keeps our tourism sector vibrant,” says Churchill.
He says he was nervous, because the PC’s have verbally attacked the ferry in the past.
“They’ve attacked it pretty consistently over the last eight years. To see this reversal in commentary, talking about giving it a chance and wishing the operator a success, it’s really a good sign.”
Bay Ferries plans to re-start the service this spring.
The government has a contract with the operator until 2026.
