The Town of Yarmouth wants the province to examine affordable housing for students at NSCC Burridge Campus.
At their Committee of the Whole meeting last week, a motion was made to ask Municipal Affairs and Housing to lead a feasibility study for student housing related to the campus.
The province recently announced that three NSCC campuses would get new residences built, along with the development of a province-wide student housing strategy.
Mayor Pam Mood says students need affordable places to live.
“So if they establish housing for NSCC students, that would free up a lot of other housing stock for folks to take over. It would be a huge help in regard to housing,” says Mood.
Mood says it would be a game changer, much like the new medical professional residence being established near the hospital.
“Students wouldn’t have to slog through the system to find a place to live that they can afford as students, and again it would free housing up for other people that are looking. Everyday I get calls.”
She says while the town can’t build, they can support initiatives from other entities, including the province.
