Yarmouth’s town council’s Committee of the Whole discussed dogs in the central business district yesterday.
This was in response to complaints from some citizens that people walking their dogs take up the whole sidewalk, forcing others to walk onto Main Street.
A motion was made to direct staff to look into having the area as a dog-free zone.
Mayor Pam Mood says that motion was unanimously defeated.
“The downtown is a place that we want people to gather, especially in the evenings where everyone says hello to each other. Dogs are a huge part of people’s lives,” says Mood.
Mood says there are problems, including dogs ‘doing their duty’ on the sidewalk, and she encourages owners to clean up after them.
“We have businesses that put water out for dogs, and we do understand there are some issues.”
But she says in the end, dogs are more than welcome downtown.
