October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
Southwest Employment Services is challenging businesses in Yarmouth and Shelburne counties to light up in purple and blue tonight to recognize how people with disabilities contribute to local businesses and the community.
Executive Director Rhonda Zasitko says those with disabilities can do wonders for the workforce.
“Sometimes a disability is just a disadvantage. People with disabilities are very happy to have work, they will be some of your most valued employees,” says Zasitko.
She says she hopes this leads to more opportunities for people with disabilities in the community.
Career Practitioner for Shelburne area Denise Nickerson says hiring someone with a disability isn’t about doing a good deed.
“There are lots of studies that show that businesses that hire persons with disabilities have an inclusive workforce, and end up having more sales and better profits.. It’s good for the financial piece for businesses as well,” says Nickerson.
Tonight’s event is called ‘Light It Up! For NDEAM,’ and it’s the first time it’s gone national.
Many famous landmarks, including the CN Tower will also be lit up in purple and blue tonight.
The Town of Yarmouth will light two trees in Frost Park, while municipal staff in Hebron are wearing purple and blue at work today.
