Yarmouth town council talked bike lanes at last night’s council meeting.
Staff are recommending the implementation of a bike lane network on arterial and collector streets of sufficient width.
In a document prepared for council, CAO Jeff Gushue says the lanes would coincide with the $2.4 million Active Transportation routes along Haley and Forest streets and Starrs Road.
Parade Street was talked about as a starting point, as work on the sewer separation project is nearing completion.
Mayor Pam Mood says it could be an opportunity to paint lines and measure out bike lanes.
“What a great opportunity to actually put the bike lanes in there. In keeping with the Traffic Authority, because they’re the experts, and taking parking into consideration as well,” says Mood.
Mood says a lot of thought will go into this, as a potential bike lane would go through a school zone and could affect parking spots.
“The Traffic Authority is fully in control of those issues. We look at the parking, and we’ll make sure there’s adequate space for folks, and we’ll make the decision accordingly.”
Council did not make a decision last night, they will talk about it again at the next Committee of the Whole meeting in two weeks.
Mood says it will give them time to gather more information and ask questions.
