Fundraising continues for the development of a splash park at Mariners Centre in Yarmouth.
Some events are coming up, including a skate with the Yarmouth Mariners tomorrow night from 6-7, with donations at the door.
Next Saturday, a big yard sale will take place at the Mariners Centre parking lot.
Linda Gallagher with the splash park committee says they’ve raised about 43 per cent of the funds they need so far.
“We are expecting the support of the firefighters through their 50/50 sale. They’re going to make a contribution by selling tickets for three months. We believe with that contribution, we’ll hit the half-way mark,” says Gallagher.
She says they’ve only been fundraising since July, and need to raise $349,000 in total.
Gallagher says last week, the committee did soil testing at three sites on the grounds of the Mariners Centre, to try and determine where the best place is to build the park.
“We’re just waiting for the report to come back. That will give us some sense of what’s underneath the ground there. We’ll then make a presentation to the Mariners Centre Management Board, who will have the final say. Any of the three potential sites would be wonderful.”
Gallagher says the town and municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle, along with local businesses have been extremely supportive.
She has meetings planned with provincial and federal government representatives to talk about more funding opportunities.
