The Municipality of Clare will work to improve and enhance six public spaces in the coming years.
They’ve released the details of the Baie Sainte-Marie Tourism Public Spaces Master Plan.
Tourism Manager for the municipality, Larry Peach, says the plan is not just for tourism.
“The parks are heavily used by residents. A lot of people make their decisions whether they’re going to move a new location if they find that the parks are in good shape and offer a lot of things to see and do.”
The six sites slated for upgrades are Mavillette Beach Provincial Park, Smugglers Cove Provincial Park, Cape St. Mary Lighthouse Park, Joseph and Marie Dugas Municipal Park, Pointe à Major Cemetery and Chapel, and Wentworth Municipal Park.
Among the improvements that will be made are for restrooms and parking facilities as well as interpretive signage and educational assets.
Peach says they are currently reviewing proposals and waiting on funding decisions from the provincial and federal governments.
“If all goes well we anticipate that phase two, the detailed design, will start later this fall. We’re hoping late October, early November.”
Peach says phase two could take up to two years to complete.
The municipality hopes to complete some of the plan’s initiatives and recommendations for the upcoming Congrès mondial acadien in 2024. They say the plan will benefit those who visit, live and invest in Clare.
The plan was prepared by UPLAND Planning + Design in Dartmouth.
