It’s August 17th, voting day for the Provincial Election. It’s kind of Election Season here, with the Federal Election just called and just over a month away, on September 20th. On top of that, in Yarmouth Town there’s going to be a bi-election on September 17th, to elect someone to replace the late Jim MacLeod.
It was something that was taught to me at a very young age – it’s not just your right to vote, it’s your duty. My parents talked about it a lot. People fought for the right to vote. People died for that right. We are so fortunate to live in a country where you can do just that.
It’s something I have said my entire adult life; I don’t care who you vote for, as long as you vote for someone.
Have you voted yet?
I voted in an advance poll, which has become a bit of a tradition for me over the years. As a broadcaster Election Day tends to be a busy one, and so I like to get my vote in just in case I don’t get a chance the day of.
This time through a lot of Nova Scotians did just that. I read a report yesterday that around 177,000 citizens have voted in the Advance Polls, which is way up by as much as 58,000 votes. Often that can be an indication that people want change, but this time I’m not so sure. There are lots of reasons why people vote early, and I think this time with the Pandemic still ongoing people voted Advance Polls “just in case” something happened in the buildup to Election Day. I could be wrong of course.
I guess we’ll find out when the ballots are finally counted.
