A peaceful protest over a proposed salmon farm in Yarmouth County is planned for tomorrow.
It’s taking place at the municipal building in Hebron at 8 a.m.
The protestors are concerned about the effect an open-flow, land-based farm in Chebogue Point would have on the environment, as well as species of fish.
Spokesperson for the group and Coldwater Lobster Association President Bernie Berry says there are too many questions and not enough answers.
“There are too many ifs, and’s and but’s that could affect the major industry. Not only lobster, but smaller industries like the worms, clams, periwinkles, rockweeds and more. There is no upside to this,” said Berry.
A public participation meeting will be held virtually on July 20th at 6 p.m, where the public can voice their concerns.
Berry says he hopes the Planning Advisory Committee and council get their message.
“This is when we can put an end to it right now. There’s no sense to drag this out and create a lot of angst and worry and frustration for the residents and the industry because of a site like this.”
He calls the process ‘flawed,’ and says council should have came to the community and industry first before a plan was developed.
After the meeting is held, the PAC will meet and make a recommendation to Yarmouth municipal council on whether or not to re-zone the land to allow open and closed land-based aquaculture, and enter into a development agreement with the company, Boreal Salmon.
