The MHL Draft takes place Saturday, and the Yarmouth Mariners are preparing.
Yarmouth will not pick until the third round, as Head Coach and GM Laurie Barron says they traded away their early picks for players that helped them contend for a championship the last few seasons.
Barron says they’ll take the best player available with each pick.
“I would say if there’s one area we need to replenish, it’s the forward position. Between drafting or trades or both,” said Barron.
Barron says they have two picks in the third round to get started.
As far as trades go, he says he likely won’t try to move up into the first two rounds, unless it makes sense.
Barron says Yarmouth is a destination for a lot of players.
“We’ve built a good thing here. Players are excited when you talk to them, a lot of them have said Yarmouth is one of the top two or three teams they’d like to be drafted to. We’ve built a solid foundation here for the future.”
He says scouting staff have done a great job of identifying players, and thanked them for their hard work.
The draft begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
