The province is announcing a joint investment for upgrades and enhancements to Spurr Wharf at the Port of Digby.
“It’s about supporting local communities through infrastructure and this is a really important part of infrastructure for seafood landing and Digby whether its scallops, lobster or aquaculture fisheries,” said Premier Iain Rankin in an interview with Y95 news. “These are critical industries that we need to continue to support.”
The Nova Scotia government will invest $1 million while the federal government will contribute $1,2 million and the Digby Port Authority will invest $500,000.
The funding from the feds and port authority will come from the Rural Northern Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
Rankin discussed the work the investment will cover.
“Augmenting the safety around the wharf area, it’s going to help increase capacity so there’s more berth at the site,” said Rankin. “The port is such an integral part of the whole community and the importance of the fisheries so its been a vision of the port authority for a while.”
An alternate access point to the wharf will also be created.
