A 12-year-old Indigenous boy from Nova Scotia is entering the final stretch of a more than 150 km trek across the province to raise awareness about residential schools.
Landyn’s Journey of Awareness began just outside of Truro on Canada Day.
Landyn Toney is now on the fifth day of his walk to his home community, the Annaoplis Valley First Nation. He left Windsor early Monday morning.
The walk serves as a reminder that not all children made it home from residential schools. The remains of more than 1,000 children have been found at the sites of former residential schools in Canada.
Landyn is also raising money for those who are in need, with a GoFundMe reaching more than $14,000 of its $20,000 goal.
People have gathered along the way to cheer him on.
The pre-teen along with five other members of a committee will decide where to donate the money based on recommendations from both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous groups.
Recommendations will be accepted until July 30th.
