You won’t have to pay to travel on ferries connecting Long and Brier Islands in Digby County.
The province has permanently eliminated travel fees on all provincial ferries, including the Petit Passage and Grand Passage ferries.
The fees, which were suspended at the start of the pandemic, were five dollars for vehicles, return trip.
The Warden of the Municipality of Digby says it’s long overdue.
Linda Gregory says this will help residents on and off the islands.
“They feel it’s the same as the highway, and they should have had to pay all these years for a ferry service to go to the hospital, grocery store, or even to get clothes,” said Gregory.
Gregory says she’s already heard from people who plan on visiting the islands now that it’s free.
“I’ve had people tell me they’re pleased this has happened for the area, as well as for themselves. Some of them have said they’re planning on making a trip down to the island to go on both ferries. It’s a benefit to everyone.”
She says there will likely be an economic spinoff for tourism.
