Some changes for those with dry wells in Yarmouth County.
The Municipalities of Yarmouth and Argyle announced they are no longer providing free drinking water to the general public.
Yarmouth Regional Emergency Management Coordinator Janine Muise says the municipalities are taking a more targeted approach.
“They’ll be more focused on providing assistance to residents for onsite solutions. Just providing free drinking water is not a solution to a problem that’s been ongoing, and a very difficult one for many residents.”
Muise says since the drought of 2016, low wells have been an issue in Yarmouth County.
Despite a decent amount of rain we’ve been receiving, some Yarmouth County wells are expected to run dry.
“The low well situation seems to be something that will continue. I believe, and based on what Environment Canada has told us, it’s due to climate change.”
She says they’ll be focusing on addressing gaps for residents who don’t have the resources to address their on-site access to water, who do not qualify for existing government programs, or both.
She says direct assistance will be delivered by each municipality, with help from provincial and local agencies who serve low-income families.
Muise says they’ll be continuing to share tips about conserving water on social media.
