It’s a dream come true for Shelburne’s Mackenzie Smith.
She’ll become the first Nova Scotian to play NCAA Division 1 basketball right out of high school in nearly 20 years, committing to St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
Smith just completed her post-grad year with King’s Edgehill Prep in Windsor after starting her basketball journey with the Shelburne Rebels in 2016.
She says leaving her hometown at age 16 was a bit nerve wracking at first.
“The first couple of weeks were pretty hard for me because I was so used to being at home. Once I got settled in, it was awesome.”
Her coach Mark French says she’s the ‘poster child’ for KES basketball, with a natural athleticism and a ton of drive.
Smith says she’s thankful for the support she’s received from her teammates, family and friends.
“I have nothing but support. My teammates pushed me to get here, and my family and friends have helped me along the way. It’s amazing to know how many people have my back.”
French says KES competes against the best in North America, and Smith thrived against the competition.
She says St. Joseph’s has a great program with a family dynamic that caught her attention, and she’s excited to be part of it.
