A chance to live a dream is on hold for Yarmouth’s Allie Munroe.
The defender had a chance to play for Team Canada in her home province at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship.
However, Premier Iain Rankin pulled the plug on the event, which was slated for next month in Halifax and Truro, due to the increase of COVID-19 cases.
Munroe says she was just getting ready for the last team intersquad game when the announcement was made.
“There were a lot of tears and disappointment. It was pretty heartbreaking to watch. It was very difficult to hear that news.”
Munroe says safety is the number one priority, but she and her teammates were confident the event could have taken place with strict protocols already in place.
The IIHF is hoping to re-schedule the event for later this year, possibly in a different location.
Munroe says it’s long overdue.
“Other World Championships have happened on the men’s side, and these events keep getting cancelled. I hope for women’s hockey that people can see the talent that’s on display.”
Last year’s tournament was also cancelled by the province.
