The Yarmouth fire department will launch a volunteer recruitment campaign this year.
Currently, the department has 26 volunteers and nine full-time career staff.
They are one of only three departments in the province with career staff.
Acting chief of the Yarmouth fire department Mike Deveau says volunteers are extremely important to the department, and they complement the staff well at calls.
He says past volunteers have turned it into a career.
“When a career position comes up, we do our best to make sure that those within the organization are able to apply for and compete for those positions. It’s a small town, we like to promote from within as much as possible.”
He says the staff are world class.
“We’re served incredibly well now by our staff and volunteers. We always want to improve, and keep setting that benchmark as high as we can.”
Deveau says more information on how to become a volunteer, and useful links are available on the Town of Yarmouth’s website.
