The future of a first nations truckhouse on Saulnierville wharf is being discussed.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says the structure is a potential safety and liability issue that impedes operations of the wharf.
Last month, DFO’s Small Craft Harbours branch contacted the owner of the structure, called ‘Treaty Truckhouse 3,’ and members of the Sipekne’katik First Nation, asking for it to be removed.
Band Chief Mike Sack says the conversation with DFO continues.
“We want to have a nice, neighbourly approach. We didn’t set it there to be oppositional or cause problems. Our front line people wanted it there for shelter and support.”
Sack says band members have been on site, and are passionate about treaty rights.
He says he supports them.
“I wouldn’t want to impose or cause problems with other locals or anything. It’s something we’re working through mindfully, while still trying to keep that presence there.”
In a statement last week, DFO says senior department officials are in active communication to find a solution for the structure, and ensure the harbour remains safe and accessible to all.
