Nova Scotia RCMP are putting a call out to citizens: wear a seatbelt…properly.
Last year, 27 serious and fatal collisions involved people not wearing seatbelts, or wearing one incorrectly.
Corporal Mike Carter with Traffic Services says that’s an alarming statistic.
He says wearing a seatbelt is a small action someone can take to prevent their own death.
“So the shoulder strap over the shoulder, the lap belt across the lap, properly secured into the clasp keeps occupants inside the safety bubble of the vehicle.” said Carter.
Carter also shed light on results of concentrated enforcement between Yarmouth and New Minas.
“We’ve laid more than a hundred seatbelt tickets just in the last two weeks,” said Carter. “It’s still shocking to us that people still neglect to wear their seatbelts.”
Nearly 1,400 people were charged in Nova Scotia for seatbelt infractions.
Fines start at $180, and add two points to your license.
