The nominees for this years Rock and Roll Hall of fame ceremony have been announced. As usual there are a ton of names that are very deserving of the honor. People like Tina Turner, Jay-Z , Carole King, The Foo Fighters and Devo just to name few.(Full list here) That’s all well and good and I expect most of them will be inducted but, what I find frustrating is the lack of Canadian artists and bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
To date there are only 5 artists and bands in the Hall from Canada. The Band, Joni Mitchell, Rush, Lenard Cohan and Neil Young. That’s it! Think of all the other great Canadian bands and artists that are missing! For some reason the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame seems to only want to choose American and British bands for the most part and kind of completely ignore the rest of North America and the world. I know there are some artists and bands from other places in the Hall but in my opinion Canada should be represented more. We have shared tons of talent with the US and remember its not called the United States Rock and Roll hall of Fame it’s just the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So why not more Canada? I’m not the only one who thinks this either. A group in Winnipeg are trying to get The Guess Who nominated and eventually inducted into the hall! Read more on that HERE!
Here are a few Canadian bands or artists that I feel should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
- April Wine
- The Tragically Hip
- Bryan Adams
- Buffy Saint Marie
- Gordon Lightfoot
- Drake
- Anne Murphy
- The Barenaked Ladies
Those are just a few off the top of my head. I’m sure there are many more. On the other hand I understand that there are a ton of bands and artists in the US too that deserve this honor. All I am saying is there needs to be more Canadian bands at some point soon. What Canadian band or artist do you think should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
