Every August 20th, the Radio Industry takes a day to pat itself on the back. National Radio Day celebrates the invention of the radio and its importance to the world. It’s also meant to bring attention to local radio stations and personalities.
It’s also a great time to say thanks to you, the listener!
I fell in love with radio a very long time ago, listening to my favourite personalities all over the continent on my AM Radio. At the young age of 15 I marched into CJLS and told Chris Perry that I wanted to be a Radio Announcer. Shockingly he didn’t kick me out of the place. He had me go into a studio and read some news. It must have been okay, as three weeks later I did my first on air shift.
That was nearly 40 years ago. As a matter of fact, I’m celebrating my 40th year in radio in March of 2021.
Many things have changed in forty years. But one thing hasn’t changed – the joy I find in talking to you every day, smiling and laughing at the good, crying at the sad. Being a part of your day is one of the greatest gifts of my life, and I thank you for being there through it all.
This is a picture from my office. That radio was new in 1934 – the year that CJLS began broadcasting. That’s 86 years ago, and we’re not going anywhere. The technology has changed, even the way that you listen – many are tuning in online these days. But it’s still a conversation, between all of our listeners. It’s still primarily focused on you, on what you care about, and on this region we love so much.
Thank you!
