The provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture has announced a new $2.5 million lobster quality and innovation centre.
Minister Keith Colwell says much of the work being done at the Université Sainte-Anne centre is about keeping lobster quality as high as the moment it’s brought on board a boat.
“Our goal is to get that quality to a point that when the customer gets it, no matter where they are in the world, it’s the same quality,” he explained. “Université Sainte-Anne has been working with us and our lobster handling courses, so it’s more about getting high-quality product into the marketplace so we set the standard in the world.”
The centre is already under construction at the Université Sainte-Anne and is expected to be open in early summer.
The three-year budget of about $2.5 million will be used for personnel, lab equipment, and operating costs.
