Sir Wilfred Laurier may not be the face of our $5 for much longer.
Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz told a business audience in Vancouver on Thursday that the central bank will be initiating an overhaul of the $5 bill.
He explained that Canadians will have the opportunity to recommend a new face for the $5 bill.
“We’ll soon be launching public consultations about who should appear on the new five dollar note,” he explained. “This will be similar to the public consultations that led to the selection of Viola Desmond for the ten dollar note.”
Poloz says the bank will be asking all Canadians to nominate any historic Canadian, and more details will be released later this month.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s first francophone prime minister, is currently featured on the $5 bill.
