The Nova Scotia government has finally sold the Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa.
A pair of Halifax developers, Glenn Squires and Basim Halef, teamed up with the Bear River First Nation band council to purchase the property.
Chief Carol Dee Potter says the council will be looking at what can be done to benefit the whole area.
“We see this purchase and partnership as an excellent opportunity for our community both now and for our future. We are willing to be holding information centres over the next few months to share details, meet our partners, and discuss opportunities ahead.”
She says the council has been interested in acquiring the land for a while.
“It’s been a part of our history that that land down around the Pines was occupied by Bear River First Nations members, they used to do porpoise hunting down there, they made baskets, sold baskets, they utilized the water side and on the Pines side, so I would say it’s been in our minds for quite a while now.”
Chief Potter says the resort, which is in their traditional area, is a big part of their economic future.
“We were looking at what we could do for our community for development, where we’re located so far from in the town of Digby or Annapolis, we just felt this is a traditional area and that it would be a benefit for everybody as a whole.”
She says that now, it’s “steady as it goes.”
