A world gold medal for a Yarmouth man in Taekwondo.
Last week, we told you about Larry Buchanan, who was set to compete in the Over 50 division at the ICTF Open World Championship tournament in Woodbridge, Ontario.
He took top spot in patterns, and got a silver in sparring in his first world appearance.
Buchanan says it was emotional.
“I called my family and I was in tears, because I finally achieved one of my goals, to win gold in patterns. I wish I had done a little better in the fighting aspect, but I gave it a go and did the best I could,” said Buchanan.
Yarmouth’s Dan Wiese took two bronze medals at the event.
Buchanan says it look a lot of training and dedication.
“It was a great division in the patterns. I ended up going up against someone from New Zealand in the sparring, he’s a 9-time world champion. It only came down to a couple of points between us through 5 rounds. It was a lot of fun.”
He says they’ll be looking at attending the next world championship in Italy in a couple of years.
Both were the only representatives from the Yarmouth area at the event.
