Two from Yarmouth are heading to the province’s volunteer reception later this year.
Kerry Muise was chosen as the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth’s top volunteer.
Muise has volunteered countless hours into the Yarmouth Rotary Club, served as president of the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce and has played a major role in fundraising for the Mariners Centre expansion.
She says she’s just one of many.
“All the volunteers behind Meals on Wheels, we have 30 of them. In the volunteer world, we rely on each other. I feel like they should be accepting this with me,” said Muise.
For the Town of Yarmouth, Chuck Smith received the honour.
He was a big part of the Yarmouth Black Soldiers of Number 2 Construction Battalion project, as well as in the Greenville Community Centre, the restoration of the former Sharon Church and in local sports.
Smith says what he enjoys most is helping people.
“And I thank my parents, they were very involved in the community. I’ve lived here most of my life, and volunteering is something that’s not forced for me, I had that instilled in me,” said Smith.
Muise and Smith were chosen by municipal councillors.
Both will attend the 51st annual Nova Scotia Volunteer Awards ceremony on September 29 in Halifax.
The local volunteer reception will be at Mariners Centre one week later.
