A newly protected island off southwestern Nova Scotia for migratory birds.
The Nova Scotia Nature Trust says Johns Island off Woods Harbour is a critical stopover for the birds on their journey.
They say it’s significant, because it’s a nesting site for several bird species at risk too.
A report in 2021 ranked the island as a high priority for sea level rise resiliency and habitat richness.
The federal government’s department of environment helped with the island’s protection, along with the Nova Scotia Crown Share Land Legacy Trust.
