This week is Lab week across Canada! During the week, the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) brings awareness to and celebrates the work and achievements of lab workers across the nation. This year it is being held from April 13-19.
During the week, Landmarks all over Canada including the Nova Scotia Legislature, Bluenose II, New Glasgow Town Hall and more light up in Indigo colours in recognition of Lab Week.
Who are they?
There are many branches of lab workers, this is just some of them.
Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT)
Medical Laboratory Technologists are the often-unseen body in Hospitals, Clinics and Research Institutions that are behind every doctor or nurse. They take samples of blood, body tissue or bodily fluids and analyze them, helping lead to a diagnosis and treatment options. They played a vital role during the Covid-19 pandemic, analyzing samples long before take home kits were available. Covid-19 is just one one the many diseases they screen for today.
Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA)
Medical Laboratory Assistants are the public face of the lab. They are the ones providing direct patient care by collecting blood samples. They also receive specimens, prepare samples to send out, and work with MLTs as a team to process patient results quickly and efficiently
Diagnostic Cytology Technologists
Diagnostic Cytology Technologists are vital in catching diseases early. They analyze samples by looking for abnormalities such as precancerous cells or clinically significant infections.
Cytologists
A Cytologist specializes in the study of cells. Like an MLT, a Cytologist will examine cells for abnormalities diagnosing and treating diseases. Cytologists often work with other specialists, such as pathologists, to help determine their findings.
This week, whether you visit the hospital or a primary care clinic, be sure to thank your local lab workers!
