Huge hiccups on the way for crossing the harbour.
The Macdonald bridge is about to be closed for four weekends for major preservation work.
Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) says Project LifeSpan is part of a two-year, $70 million project to work on the ‘iconic towers’ that will have 85 people involved.
Ninety per cent of the supplies will be purchased in Nova Scotia.
What is involved
They will strip them bare of 70 years of accumulated paint.
“This will allow for thorough inspections and any required repairs to ensure their continued structural integrity for the next 70 years,” says HHB.
The towers will then be fully wrapped to make sure there is no spray or paint chips that fall into the harbour and any surrounding property and traffic.
HHB says four weekends are required mostly to not only help with the construction but remove a platform beneath the Halifax Tower and to separate the work area from traffic on the bridge deck.
More than 40,000 cars, small trucks and buses cross the bridge daily, and those drivers are encouraged to plan ahead.
The Dartmouth tower will be finished this year, while the Halifax tower will be done in 2026.
The first closure is next Friday, April 25.
